Orthodontic Braces

Orthodontic braces are dental appliances used to correct the alignment of teeth and jaws. They are commonly used to treat various orthodontic issues, such as crooked teeth, overcrowding, misaligned bites (malocclusions), and other dental irregularities. Braces work by applying gentle and controlled forces to move teeth into their desired positions over a period of time.

Braces consist of several components that work together to gradually shift teeth

Brackets: These are small, typically square-shaped attachments made of metal, ceramic, or other materials that are bonded to the front surface of each tooth. The brackets serve as anchors for the other components of the braces.

Archwire: The archwire is a thin metal wire that runs through the brackets. It provides the necessary force to guide the movement of the teeth.

Elastics or Rubber Bands: Elastics or rubber bands are often used to connect specific brackets and guide the movement of teeth and jaws in specific directions.

Ligatures or O-Rings: These are small rubber bands, wires, or other materials that secure the archwire to the brackets.

Bands: In some cases, metal bands are placed around the back molars to provide additional support and anchorage for the braces.

Orthodontic treatment with braces typically involves the following steps

Consultation: We will examine your teeth, jaws, and bite to determine if braces are the right treatment for you. They may take X-rays, photographs, and impressions of your teeth for a comprehensive assessment.

Treatment Plan: Based on the assessment, the orthodontist will create a personalized treatment plan that outlines the specific adjustments needed to achieve your desired results.

Placement: During the placement appointment, brackets are bonded to your teeth using a special adhesive. The archwire is then threaded through the brackets.

Adjustments: Over the course of treatment, you will have regular appointments (usually every 4 to 6 weeks) to have the braces adjusted. During these appointments, the orthodontist may replace the archwire, change the elastics, and make other necessary modifications to continue guiding the teeth into their desired positions.

Duration of Treatment: The length of treatment varies depending on the severity of the orthodontic issues and the type of braces used. Treatment can range from several months to a few years.

Removal: Once the desired results are achieved, the braces are removed. Afterward, a retainer is often provided to help maintain the new alignment of your teeth.

Orthodontic braces have evolved over the years, and there are now various types available, including traditional metal braces, ceramic braces that are more discreet, lingual braces that are placed on the back of the teeth, and clear aligner systems like Invisalign that use a series of clear trays to gradually move teeth.
