Periodontal surgery, also known as gum surgery or gum flap surgery, is a type of dental surgery performed to treat various conditions that affect the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. It is often used to manage and correct advanced stages of gum disease (periodontal disease) that have not responded to non-surgical treatments. The goal of periodontal surgery is to restore and maintain the health of the gums and bone that support the teeth.

There are different types of periodontal surgeries, each designed to address specific issues

Pocket Reduction Surgery (Flap Surgery): This is one of the most common types of periodontal surgery. It involves making small incisions in the gum tissue to lift it away from the teeth. This provides access to the root surfaces and allows the dentist or periodontist to thoroughly clean the areas affected by gum disease. Any damaged tissue is removed, and the gum tissue is then sutured back into place, reducing the depth of gum pockets around the teeth.

Bone Grafting: In cases where periodontal disease has led to bone loss around the teeth, bone grafting may be performed. This involves placing bone or bone-like material in the areas of bone loss to stimulate new bone growth and improve the stability of the teeth.

Soft Tissue Grafting: Sometimes, gum recession exposes the roots of the teeth, leading to sensitivity and an unaesthetic appearance. Soft tissue grafting involves taking tissue from another part of the mouth or using donor tissue to cover the exposed roots, improving the appearance and reducing sensitivity.

Crown Lengthening: This surgery is done to expose more of the tooth’s crown by removing excess gum tissue. It may be performed for cosmetic reasons or to prepare the tooth for other dental procedures, such as placing a crown.

Periodontal surgery: A gingivectomy involves removing excess gum tissue, often due to overgrowth or for cosmetic reasons. It helps reshape the gumline and improve overall oral hygiene.

Guided Tissue Regeneration: In cases where bone loss has occurred, this procedure involves placing a membrane between the bone and gum tissue to encourage the growth of new bone while preventing the growth of unwanted tissue.

Laser Periodontal Surgery: Some periodontal surgeries can be performed using dental lasers, which offer precise and minimally invasive treatment options. Laser surgery can help remove infected tissue, stimulate healing, and promote gum attachment to tooth surfaces.

Periodontal surgery is typically performed by periodontists, who are specialized dentists with advanced training in the treatment of gum diseases and conditions. Before undergoing any type of periodontal surgery, we carry out a thorough examination and consultation will be conducted to determine the most appropriate treatment plan based on the individual’s oral health needs.

It’s important to note that the choice of periodontal treatment, whether surgical or non-surgical, depends on the severity of the gum disease and other individual factors. Regular dental check-ups and good oral hygiene practices are essential for preventing gum disease and reducing the need for surgical interventions.
